Collaboration and Dedication: Digitizing Legacy Publications of the Asiatic Society  from Biodiversity Heritage Library  (2026-7-1 22:15)

Back in June of 2010, the founding institutions of BHL began a major digitization project that would span the work of 11 years, 9 institutions, 19 people, 40 tickets within BHL’s issue tracking system, over 82 comments on those tickets, and countless hours of work. Was this part of a grant funded project to facilitate the digitization and inclusion of millions of pages into BHL’s collection? No. This body of digitization and curation work revolves around the series of titles that are part of the Journal of The Asiatic Society. By June 2021, BHL was gratified to finally call the digitization of all public domain volumes "complete" to the best of its ability.

今年は夜中に部屋に飛び込んでくる羽虫がとても少ない。 なので窓を開けて快適に過ごせているが、窓を閉めようとしたら、何かが居た。蛾かな？！ 近づいて確認したらデカいゾウムシ。オオゾウムシだった。 今まで見てきた個体の中で最大サイズだったので、口吻を除く全長は27ミリもあり驚いた。

特定外来生物 オオキンケイギク  from 庄内の日本桜草栽培日誌  (2026-6-13 16:16)

ウチの前でオレンジ色の大輪の花が咲き乱れていました。 昨年も開花していたのかもしれませんが、群生して綺麗に咲いていたので、初めて気付きました。 特定外来生物のオオキンケイギク（大金鶏菊）です。 根っこごと引き抜き、開花したばかりなので地面に転がして天日干ししてます。 今黄色く咲いているのがタンポポもどきのブタナ。 こちらはひょろっと長い茎の先にタンポポに似た小さい黄色い花が咲いています。 オオキンケイギクはオレンジ色の大輪で、まとまって咲いているので直ぐに気付けます。 見つけたらその場所を管理している行政へ連絡してください。 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cYB0sOkWqc

BHL Servers are Moving!  from Biodiversity Heritage Library  (2026-6-9 23:53)

The big day is here! BHL's Tech Team is starting the three-week process of moving BHL's technical infrastructure from the Smithsonian data center just outside of Washington, DC, to the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois.

Pliny the Elder’s Natural History is one of the most influential works of the ancient world. This post explores BHL’s 1469 Venice edition, contributed by the Natural History Museum, London a remarkable incunabulum and the oldest printed book in the BHL collection.

腕時計の電池交換 3回目  from 庄内の日本桜草栽培日誌  (2026-5-29 7:03)

2026年5月28日朝、腕時計の電池が切れてました。 2002年に購入。1回目の電池交換は2009年08月20日。8年間。 2回目が2017年09月13日ですから、今回も8年以上稼働してました。 交換する電池はCR2016ですが、100円ショップA店に行ったら無くて、代わりにCR2032が2列で大量に並んでました。 『CR2016を購入したのは何年も前だから、CR2016がモデルチェンジしてCR2032になったんだろう」と勘違いして購入。 腕時計から電池を取り出した時に間違いに気付きました。 100円ショップB店でもCR2032が2列で大量に並んでましたが、CR2016を発見。 三菱製CR2016は1袋2個入りで110円。DAISO製は1袋3個入りで110円。前者を購入。 でも欲しかったマクセル製はマンガンリチウムで、三菱製とDAISO製はリチウム。 マクセル製は2回とも8年稼働しましたが、三菱製は8年保たないでしょうね。 電池を組み込んで中蓋を閉めます。 『後はピンセットでACマークをポチっと押すだけ』なのですが、裏返して文字盤を見たら、なぜか起動してました。 嬉しくて即撮影。この後日時をセットしました。今回も無事に出来てよかったです。(^^)

Commemorating 20 Years of BHL at the 2026 Annual Meeting  from Biodiversity Heritage Library  (2026-5-27 22:49)

The Biodiversity Heritage Library continued our 20th anniversary celebration at our Annual Meeting in London from 27 April to 1 May. This year, founding members and 10th anniversary co-hosts, the Natural History Museum, London and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, welcomed 46 representatives from 30 institutions across 8 countries to gather and plan for BHL’s future.
